Statewide LGBTQ+ Trainings for the Developmental Disabilities Field
The NYS Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC) is pleased to announce a new initiative to help staff better support individuals with intellectual and development disabilities (IDD) who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ+). DDPC has awarded a total of $450,000 to the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) for a three year project to develop and deliver a statewide training on supporting individuals with IDD who identify as LGBTQ+.
Research has shown that individuals with IDD who identify as LGBTQ+ face higher rates of abuse, homelessness, co-occurring disorders, negative health outcomes and increased discrimination. This training will help build staff capacity and inform the developmental disability field on best practices in working with individuals with IDD who identify as LGBTQ+ The anticipated start date for this new program is July 1, 2021.
