Community Navigators Scenario-based Training Curriculum Series

DDPC announces funding to select one grantee in the amount of up to $150,000 ($75,000 per year for a two-year period) to research, develop, and disseminate a stakeholder-informed instructional curriculum with video-based scenarios to help people with developmental and other disabilities learn transportation skills including trip planning and wayfinding, and develop advocacy/self-advocacy skills related to ADA transportation rights.

Transportation remains one of the biggest barriers to individuals with developmental and other disabilities accessing and actively participating in their communities. Research has shown that informational and attitudinal barriers are among the most significant barriers to individuals with developmental and other disabilities using transportation and engaging with the community-at-large. At the same time, new and veteran riders with developmental and other disabilities are increasingly relying on public transportation and recently legalized ridesharing. Informational resources on transportation can support skill development in many areas including advocacy and self-advocacy, and ultimately increase community engagement opportunities.

Accordingly, individuals with developmental and other disabilities who are active or are becoming more active in their communities require information and skills to successfully use different types of transportation. The NYS DDPC is seeking a multi-module curriculum that would include video-based and scenario-based content that addresses transportation rights, trip planning, and wayfinding. Scenarios would be peer-driven, featuring self-advocates demonstrating information and teaching specific skills through interactive and experiential methods.
