Community Navigators SBT Curriculum
and Training Project
Project Status: Active
Grantee: Self-Advocacy Association of NY State (SANYS)
Funding Amount: $75,000 per year
Grant period: 01/2019 - 12/2020
WHY IS THIS NEEDED?
Transportation remains one of the biggest barriers to people with ID/DD and other disabilities accessing and actively participating in their communities. Research has shown informational and attitudinal barriers are among the most significant barriers to individuals with developmental and other disabilities using transportation and engaging with the community-at-large. Informational resources on transportation can support skill development in many areas including advocacy and self-advocacy, and ultimately increase community engagement opportunities.
HOW WILL THIS PROJECT HELP?
People with ID/DD and other disabilities who are active, or becoming more active, in their communities require information and skills to successfully use different types of transportation. DDPC is seeking a multi-module curriculum including video and scenario-based content that addresses transportation rights, trip planning, and wayfinding. Scenarios would be peer-driven, featuring self-advocates demonstrating information and teaching specific skills through interactive and experiential methods.
